Work in Playground
Explore and refine a contribution, and record the decisions behind it.
Playground is where the work on a contribution happens, and where you write down why you made each choice. Those notes are what the Manifest is built from later, so writing as you decide is what makes the documentation cheap to produce.
For the person contributing: a designer or developer.
Before you begin
- A component on a process. See Add a contribution.
- The Admin or Editor role on the team, to change anything. A Viewer can read.
Open Playground
Open the component. Two views sit in the header: PLAYGROUND and MANIFEST. Playground opens by default.
The page is headed with the component's name, with its current phase and how far through the checks it is.
Work through the phases
The document shows every phase of the process, each with its checks underneath. The phase the component is in is highlighted.
Tick a check when it is genuinely done. Checks sync both ways with the Figma widget, so a designer ticking something in Figma updates this page, and the other way round. The widget picks up changes made here the next time somebody interacts with it.
Ticking a check does not move the component to the next phase. See moving a contribution on.
Write the notes that become documentation
Under any check, write what you decided and why. For the Button's loading state that might be which states you ruled out, what you agreed with development about the property name, or the use case that forced the change.
Write the reasoning, not a summary of the design. The design is already in Figma; the reasoning is the part that is lost otherwise.
You can add images to a contribution, which the Manifest can reuse.
Work at the same time as other people
Playground is collaborative. When other people have the component open, their changes arrive as they type, and the header shows Connected. If it shows Connecting, your changes are not being saved yet. Wait for Connected before writing anything you care about.
If the page says the component is syncing, leave it a moment and reload rather than retyping. Compfeed is rebuilding the document, which happens after the process changes.
Where AI helps
Compfeed can draft the Manifest from what the contribution already holds. That is a Manifest feature, covered in From Playground to Manifest.
Nothing in Playground is written by AI. What you type is yours.
